ABOUT
The Langen Foundation is presenting depictions of the seasons from the Edo period (1603-1868), a golden age of Japanese art, in the Japan Room. The beauty of the seasons and their inevitable transience have always been celebrated. The Langen Collection owns many scroll paintings with seasonal references: spring, summer, autumn and winter are depicted in landscapes on a scroll or in a series of pictures. Seasonal flowers and plants are combined with seasonal birds. The selection of works represents the stylistic diversity within this genre and shows the magnificent expression of Japanese ink painting of the Edo period.
